Reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter estimates that the insured losses from the recent flooding in Central and Eastern Europe could range from €1.6 billion to €2.1 billion. The flooding, which began on September 11, 2024, was exacerbated by intense rainfall but resulted in lower damages compared to major flood events in 1997 and 2002. Enhanced infrastructure and flood management strategies have been credited with mitigating losses, with fewer properties affected compared to past events. By territory, the highest estimated losses are projected for the Czech Republic and Austria, while Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania are expected to see combined losses of around €100 million to €150 million.
