McKinsey & Co. is nearing a settlement with U.S. prosecutors that could see the firm paying at least $500 million to resolve investigations related to its work for opioid manufacturers. This payment would address both criminal and civil inquiries by the Justice Department, building on previous settlements McKinsey reached with several states for its role in the opioid crisis, for which it has already paid hundreds of millions. Although the firm has maintained that its past activities were legal, it acknowledged that its services fell short of its own standards and has since implemented extensive reforms in its client selection process. The investigations are part of broader efforts by numerous state and local governments to recover costs associated with the nationwide opioid epidemic.
