A top official from Indonesia’s information technology ministry has resigned following a June cyber attack that disrupted government services, including airport, immigration, and scholarship services. Semuel Abrijani Pangarepan, director-general for the Communication and Information Technology Ministry’s applications and information, stepped down, saying he was “morally responsible” for the incident. The cyberattack, which was executed through the Brain Cipher ransomware, led to the shutdown of the Temporary National Data Centre (PDN)-2 in Surabaya, East Java. The hackers, who initially demanded an $8 million ransom, eventually provided the decryption key to the Indonesian government for free.
