The World Health Organization (WHO) has re-declared mpox, a viral infection primarily transmitted through close contact, as a global health emergency due to a significant resurgence in cases, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This declaration comes as the ongoing outbreak in Congo has reported over 27,000 infections and 1,100 fatalities since January 2023, impacting vulnerable populations, especially children. Although the spread of mpox is not as easily transmissible as COVID-19, there are concerns regarding two different strains of the virus circulating and their potential rapid spread. Efforts are underway to secure increased medical resources and funding to combat the outbreak effectively, particularly in affected regions.
