The Zurich Foundation, in collaboration with the ICLEI International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives and the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, implemented the “Climate Resilience for Communities” project in Izmir in 2023. The project aims to enhance the city’s preparedness against increasing climate challenges, such as severe rainfall and flooding, particularly relevant for a Mediterranean basin that is predicted to be heavily impacted by climate change.
To promote community engagement and raise awareness about the waste crisis, a cleanup event was held on September 20, marking World Cleanup Day. This initiative involved volunteers from Zurich and local children, resulting in a successful and educational trash collection competition. The children not only learned the importance of maintaining a clean environment but also celebrated their achievements with a fun party afterward.
The initiative underscores the commitment to building a brighter future through collective action. The project organizers extended their heartfelt gratitude to all volunteers who played an active role in the fieldwork throughout the event.
