BHP Group and Vale SA have reached a landmark settlement of 170 billion reais (approximately $29.8 billion) with Brazil over the catastrophic 2015 Mariana dam collapse. This agreement, which is reported to be the largest of its kind worldwide, will see the companies compensate the Brazilian government, affected states, and communities, while also addressing obligations for environmental recovery and resettlement. Although this settlement helps mitigate legal pressures in Brazil, BHP still faces a class-action lawsuit in the UK involving approximately 620,000 claimants connected to the disaster. The Brazilian government, represented by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, welcomed the settlement as a strong move towards accountability and better corporate practices in the mining sector.
