The Global Federation of Insurance Associations (GFIA) held its 2024 Annual General Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, from December 3 to 7, where key issues facing the insurance sector were discussed. This year’s agenda included in-depth discussions on pressing matters such as artificial intelligence, climate change, cyber risk, and regulatory relief for the insurance industry. Additionally, the topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion were explored from various perspectives, encompassing the experiences of consumers and industry professionals alike.
Turkey’s representative, TSB General Secretary Özgür Obalı, attended the meeting, which also featured the election of GFIA’s new leadership. Stephen Frank, who has over twenty years of experience in the financial services sector and has served as the President and CEO of CLHIA since 2017, was elected as GFIA President. Thea Utoft Høj Jensen, the General Director of Insurance Europe, was appointed as GFIA Secretary General.
Furthermore, Özgür Obalı was re-elected as the chair of the Road Safety Working Group for a two-year term. This group highlighted the need to improve road safety—an essential priority for the insurance sector—given that there are approximately 1.5 billion drivers worldwide. The group’s initiatives for 2025 will focus on evaluating and mitigating road risks.
