Florida and Tennessee Take Action to Protect Hurricane Victims from Insurance Fraud

In response to the damages caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, officials in Florida and Tennessee are implementing measures to enhance accountability among insurers. Tennessee’s Department of Commerce and Insurance has mandated insurers to report claims data linked to Hurricane Helene, effective from November 5, while the attorney general’s office will monitor claims denials closely. Meanwhile, Florida’s Chief Financial Officer has launched a “Check My Contract” program aimed at reviewing homeowners’ contracts with adjusters and roofing contractors to prevent fraud and ensure compliance with regulations. As of late October, Florida reported over 257,700 claims from Hurricane Milton, with 31,345 closed with payments.
