The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has proposed major safety changes following the 2023 Ohio train derailment, which forced residents to temporarily abandon their homes after a train caught fire and released hazardous materials. The NTSB is recommending new safety regulations for inspections and maintenance of heat bearing detectors, as well as a replacement schedule for tank cars like those involved in the Ohio derailment. Additionally, the board is calling for improved volunteer firefighter training standards and faster transmission of information to emergency responders about hazardous materials. The proposed changes come as part of a consent decree worth over $310 million with Norfolk Southern, the railroad company involved in the incident.
