A salvage operation for a Greek-registered oil tanker, the Sounion, that was disabled after a Houthi militant attack in the Red Sea is expected to commence within 48 hours. The operation is complicated by the presence of explosives rigged by the Houthis on the vessel, which is carrying approximately 1 million barrels of crude oil. The successful removal of the tanker is critical to prevent a potential environmental disaster in a difficult-to-access area. Greece is coordinating efforts with Saudi Arabia and international authorities to ensure the safe management and towing of the vessel.
