A new regulation will take effect in Turkey on December 5, 2024, addressing complications in second-hand vehicle purchases that have arisen from the 15-day traffic insurance validity period. Previously, buyers were required to first transfer the vehicle registration at a notary before arranging for insurance, which created issues when accidents occurred during the interim period. In such cases, insurance companies would often contact the former owner, as the policy remained in their name. Under the new law, purchasers of used vehicles must now secure a traffic insurance policy before proceeding to register the vehicle in their own name at the notary, thereby streamlining the process and reducing potential disputes over liability in the event of an accident. This change aims to enhance clarity and security in the vehicle transfer process.
