The IACS Council, under the leadership of newly appointed Chairman Roberto Cazzulo, convened in Rome for its 89th session (C89), where crucial advancements were made on several industry issues. Notably, the Council emphasized the importance of integrating human element considerations into all IACS workflows from the outset. During the session, which included participation from Türk Loydu, key developments included:

– The training of over 150 technical experts in Human Element Impact Assessment, aimed at formulating a High-level Position Paper to enhance industry-wide understanding and cooperation.
– Initiation of work by the Safe Digital Transformation Panel, addressing complex systems, data quality, and safety management for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS).
– Progress in safe decarbonization initiatives, with five Unified Requirements currently under development.
– A thorough review of Unified Requirement Z29 regarding Remote Survey, to ensure compliance and coordination with evolving IMO standards.
– The transition of leadership within the IACS General Policy Group, marking the end of Mr. LI Zhiyuan’s chairmanship and the welcoming of Dr. Ajay Asok Kumar as the new Chair.

Chairman Cazzulo remarked, “C89 held intensive discussions across a wide range of issues that will determine the shape of the industry for years to come. Ensuring the centrality of the role of the human element in those discussions substantially reinforces our commitment to delivering a safe digital and decarbonization transformation.”
