Shipping containers filled with hazardous industrial waste from Albania, destined for Thailand, are set to return to Europe following alarms raised by environmental groups about illegal exports. An A.P. Moller-Maersk vessel carrying 40 containers will stop in Singapore before heading back to Italy, with plans to repatriate the waste to Albania. A total of 60 additional containers aboard another Maersk ship are also being directed to return to Europe. The Basel Action Network criticized the ease with which such shipments occur, emphasizing the need for governments to uphold regulations outlined in the Basel Convention regarding hazardous waste.
